Mosaic address tiles can be a fairly simple DIY project depending on the complexity of your design. Sometimes the design process can take the longest - especially if you're a perfectionist like me. A simple 3-color design can potentially only take 1 hour to complete. When choosing your tile colors, pick colors that compliment the exterior of your house.
Instructions
- Clean the tiles with the rubbing alcohol and a dry cloth. Wipe off any excess rubbing alcohol with a wet rag and allow the tile to dry.
- Draw your home address numbers on each tile with a pencil. Use the stencils for the house numbers, if you want cleaner edges on the numbers. If you bought the Matte Stencil Film, place a sheet of the stencil film over a pattern or numbers and trace them on the film, then cut out the pattern or numbers with a razor or scissors, then use the stencil you just made to trace your numbers on the tiles. - Choose your colors and squeeze them sparingly into the palette wells.
- Paint the border design and numbers onto your tiles over the pencil markings.
- Place the tiles onto a cookie sheet at least 2" apart from each other. Preheat the oven and bake according to the instructions on the label for the paint you've chosen.
- Once the baking process is complete, turn off the oven and let the tiles cool off INSIDE the oven WITH THE OVEN DOOR CLOSED.
- Spray on a light coat of the Krylon Crystal Clear or Rust-oleum clear enamel and let it dry.
- Spray on another light coat of the Rust-oleum clear enamel and let it dry.
- Lay out the tiles into the arrangement that you desire (small tiles are usually used as a border around the larger address number tiles). You can use tile spacers to keep them properly spaced so you can get an accurate measurement for the plywood.
- Measure the width and height of all tiles as they are laid out.
- Cut out the plywood to the dimensions of your laid out tiles.
- Spread a thin layer of grout onto the plywood.
- Place the tiles onto grout.
- Apply grout between all of the tiles.
- With a wet cloth, clean the grout off the tops of the tiles and let the grout dry completely.
- Spray on a light coat of the Rust-oleum clear enamel over all of the tiles and grout, and let it dry.
- Spray on another light coat of the Rust-oleum clear enamel and let it dry.
- After everything is dry, mount the plywood to your house with the Liquid Nails.
